It’s expected to cost from under £30,000 when it goes on sale in February. From launch it’ll have 194 miles of range, but there will be a big battery version along later with more range. It will be available with a single motor that sends 174bhp to the front wheels, with power drawn from a 45.1kWh battery pack.

The battery is fitted to the car using cell-to-body construction, which is said to boost chassis rigidity. A smaller sibling to the existing Atto 3, the new Atto 2 measures 4.31m long, 1.83m wide and 1.68m tall. That lines it up neatly to serve as a higher-riding alternative to the BYD Dolphin hatchback.

Outside, the Atto 2 displays chunky SUV styling, with LED headlights as standard and slim daytime running lights. The rear features a roof spoiler and LED tail-lights.

Inside, the Atto 2 offers seating for five as well as a 400-litre boot. The centre console is home to physical controls for some functions, including a button for the windscreen demister, a knob for audio control and a switch to select different driving modes.
It also gets BYD’s 15.6in infotainment touchscreen, which can be rotated to display in both portrait and landscape orientations.
